When Shame Won’t Let You Go is the second message in The Comeback series, inviting us to confront the weight of failure and rediscover the grace of Jesus. We live in a culture that quickly labels us by our worst moments—where one decision, one mistake, or one failure can feel like it defines our entire identity. Over time, those moments don’t just shape how others see us—they shape how we see ourselves.
In John 21:1–19, Peter knows this feeling all too well. After denying Jesus, he returns to fishing—back to what’s familiar, predictable, and safe. It’s what we often do when shame clouds our sense of purpose. We retreat. We hide. We assume the calling is gone. But Peter’s failure didn’t cancel his future—and neither does yours.
What’s striking in this passage is how Jesus responds. He doesn’t confront Peter with anger or disappointment. Instead, He meets him with provision, presence, and patience. Before addressing Peter’s failure, Jesus serves him breakfast. It’s a reminder that God’s love isn’t earned through perfection—it’s given freely, even in our lowest moments.
Then comes restoration. Three questions. Three opportunities to reaffirm love. Jesus doesn’t just erase Peter’s past—He reinstates his purpose.
This sermon is a reminder that shame doesn’t get the final word—Jesus does. And His voice is not one of condemnation, but calling. Your story is not over. In Christ, failure is never the end—it’s often where the comeback begins.
