In Week 6 of our Christmas series, “Jesus and the Griswolds,” we turn our attention to one of the most underrated heroes of the holiday classic—Ellen Griswold. While Clark dreams big and chaos swirls in every direction, Ellen quietly holds the family together. She doesn’t demand the spotlight, and she certainly doesn’t pretend everything is perfect. She simply stays—steady, patient, loving, and loyal. In Scripture, we meet a woman who embodies that same spirit: Ruth.
This week’s message, “Ellen Griswold and the Strength of Quiet Faithfulness,” explores how Ruth’s unwavering loyalty to Naomi (Ruth 1:16–17) shows that faithfulness doesn’t have to be loud or dramatic to be powerful. Ruth stayed when it would have been easier to leave. She trusted God when the future was uncertain. And God honored her quiet faithfulness in a way that changed history—leading to the birth of Obed, Jesse, and eventually King David (Ruth 4:13–17).
Just like Ruth, Ellen Griswold models a kind of faithfulness our world desperately needs. She doesn’t yell or demand perfection—though she might sneak a smoke to survive the chaos. But she stays. She loves. She supports. Her quiet consistency keeps the whole Griswold family from falling apart.
This sermon invites us to consider where we can practice that same steady loyalty: comforting someone hurting, being patient with family, showing up for our serve team, or investing in the next generation.
Because quiet faithfulness—your loyalty, your love, your steadfast heart—has the power to impact generations.
