Aunt Bethany's Faith Never Ages

In Week 3 of our series, Jesus and the Griswolds, we look at one of the most endearing characters in Christmas Vacation: Aunt Bethany. She may forget the blessing and accidentally recite the Pledge of Allegiance at Christmas dinner, but she shows up. And sometimes, that’s what real faith looks like. Not polished. Not perfect. Just present. The big idea this week is: You’re never too old, too overlooked, or too “past your prime” for God to use you.

We’ll look at the story of Sarah and Abraham in Genesis 18. They had been waiting 25 years for the child God promised. By the time Sarah heard the promise again, she laughed—not out of joy, but disbelief. She was 89 years old. The situation seemed impossible. Yet God gently asked, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” Even when the promise seemed delayed, it was not denied.

Later, Hebrews 11 reminds us that Sarah did receive what God promised—because she kept believing. Her story teaches us that faith can endure silence, waiting, and uncertainty.

Just like Aunt Bethany, Sarah shows us that faith is not about getting everything right—it’s about continuing to trust that God is still writing your story. And through baptism, we are reminded that God gives new beginnings at every age and every stage.

Main Takeaway: When you think your time has passed, God’s plan is often just beginning.
