This Sunday’s message, “Deborah and Jael – Two Unique Callings, One Extraordinary Mission,” continues our inspiring sermon series, Listen to Women Preach. Our special guest speaker, Beth Hackbarth, will guide us through Judges 4 and 5, where two remarkable women step into God’s plan in unexpected ways.
In Judges 4, we meet Deborah, the prophetess and judge of Israel—a wise and courageous leader who speaks God’s commands with authority. Alongside her is Barak, the general who responds to her prophetic word and leads Israel’s army into battle against King Jabin and his fierce commander Sisera. Yet victory ultimately comes not from military power, but through the brave hands of Jael, a woman outside Israel’s ranks who fulfills God’s promise by striking down the enemy when the moment arrives.
Judges 5, the Song of Deborah, celebrates this divine partnership—a poetic reminder that God works through every vessel willing to obey Him. Deborah leads from the hilltop; Jael acts from her tent. One uses her voice, the other her tools of hospitality, and both change the course of history.
Their story challenges us to discover our own calling—whether public or private, visible or unseen—and to serve faithfully where God has placed us. As Hebrews 12 urges, let us “run with perseverance the race marked out for us,” confident that when each of us walks in our unique calling, God weaves our stories into His extraordinary mission.
